Worm-Like Robotic Locomotion with a Compliant Modular Mesh

چکیده
In order to mimic and better understand the way an earthworm uses its many segments to navigate diverse terrain, this paper describes the design, performance, and sensing capabilities of a new modular soft robotic worm. The robot, Compliant Modular Mesh Worm (CMMWorm), utilizes a compliant mesh actuated at modular segments to create waveforms along its body. These waveforms can generate peristaltic motion of the body similar to that of an earthworm. The modular mesh is constructed from 3-D printed and commercially available parts allowing for the testing of a variety of components that can be easily interchanged. In addition to having independently controlled segments and interchangeable mesh properties, CMMWorm also has greater range of contraction (52% of maximum diameter) than our previous robot Softworm (73% of maximum diameter). The six-segment robot can traverse flat ground and pipes. We show that a segment is able to detect the wall of a pipe and return to its initial position using actuator-based load-sensing. A simple kinematic model predicts the outer diameter of the worm robot’s mesh as a function of encoder position.

Optimal Trajectory Generation for a Robotic Worm via Parameterization by B-Spline Curves
In this paper we intend to generate some set of optimal trajectories according to the number of control points has been applied for parameterizing those using B-spline curves. The trajectories are used to generate an optimal locomotion gait in a crawling worm-like robot. Due to gait design considerations it is desired to minimize the required torques in a cycle of gait. Similar to caterpillars,...
متن کاملMechatronics and buoyancy implementation of robotic fish swimming with modular fin mechanisms
This paper presents an underwater vehicle mimicking the undulating fins of fish. To mimic the actual flexible fins of real fish, a fin-like mechanism is modelled with a series of connecting linkages. By virtue of a specially designed strip, each link is able to turn and slide with respect to the adjacent link. The driving linkages are used to form a mechanical fin consisting of several fin segm...

In human and animal locomotion, compliant structures play an essential role in the body and actuator design. Recently, researchers have started to exploit these compliant mechanisms in robotic systems with the goal to achieve the yet superior motions and performances of the biological counterpart. For instance, compliant actuators such as series elastic actuators (SEA) can help to improve the e...
متن کاملLocomotion control strategies for reconfigurable modular robots
Reconfigurable Modular Robots are assemblies of autonomous robotic units, referred to as modules, joined together using connection mechanisms. By rearranging the connectivity of these modules it is possible to change the morphology of the modular robot to make it fit to different environmental circumstances. The locomotion control of reconfigurable modular robots is therefore characterized by a...
متن کاملEvolutionary Synthesis of Structure and Control for Locomotion Systems
This paper presents a global design approach for self-reconfigurable locomotion systems based on evaluation by dynamic simulation and optimization by artificial evolution. The main objective of this approach is to obtain fully integrated robotic solutions in term of morphology (topology and kinematics) and control (architecture and command). To achieve this goal, a modular robotic system is des...
